After the LCD itself, backlighting is the most important technology affecting the overall quality of your display’s readability, contrast and clarity. Backlighting is also a significant cost in a Liquid Crystal Module (LCM) hence selecting the correct technology and performance level is critical.

The Backlight technology required depends on the application. There are three general technologies used in conjunction with LCD technology: Electroluminescent, (EL); Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tube, (CCFL) and Light Emitting Diode, (LED).
The performance level of backlights varies immensely. The difference in light output efficiency from a basic light box design to new micro lens technology can be spectacular.
