An OLED is an electronic device made by placing a series of organic thin films between two conductors. When electrical current is applied, a bright light is emitted. This process is called electrophosphorescence.

When used to produce displays, OLED technology produces self-luminous displays that do not require backlighting. These properties result in thin, very compact displays.

OLED’s offer many advantages over LCD technologies such as STN, CSTN and TFT. Some of these advantages are listed below:-

  • High brightness/sunlight readable
  • Wider viewing angle > 170°
  • Higher contrast > 200:1
  • Quicker response < 10µs
  • Thickness < 1.6mm
  • 25% lighter weight 2g typical
  • Low power 50mW
  • Wide temperature
  • No backlight required - self emitting

There are two types of OLED displays - passive and active. While passive technology is well established  and is in MP the active technology is only now being commercialised.
